$1.7bn Sphere Abu Dhabi to be built on Yas Island

Abu Dhabi is developing the world’s second Sphere venue, a $1.7 billion project on Yas Island, marking the first such venue outside the United States. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2029, the venue will integrate ultra-high-resolution screens and multi-sensory technology to host concerts, immersive productions, and major events, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s global cultural and entertainment appeal. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co announced the project, positioning it as a landmark for tourism and economic diversification. Located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the venue will feature lush surroundings and proximity to other attractions, making it a key destination on Yas Island. Sphere Abu Dhabi will offer three main event categories: Sphere Experiences (immersive productions), concert residencies, and marquee events like combat sports or conferences. The venue’s exterior Exosphere LED screen will showcase Emirati culture, while its programming will highlight local and global artists. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized the project’s long-term vision, calling it a testament to Abu Dhabi’s ambition and cultural leadership. James L Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, described the venue as the first step in expanding Sphere’s global network, leveraging Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure and cultural significance. The venue will also serve as a gateway to Abu Dhabi’s broader entertainment ecosystem, located near Zayed International Airport and Yas Island’s hospitality infrastructure. Plans include exclusive Sphere Experiences reflecting Emirati heritage, alongside international concerts and events. Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to attract global visitors, strengthen the emirate’s reputation as a cultural hub, and create lasting opportunities for Emirati talent and storytelling.
