2026 Ibom Open to Feature 350+ Golfers in Uyo from June 4–7

The 2026 Ibom Open Golf Championship will welcome more than 350 golfers from Nigeria and internationally to Uyo, Akwa Ibom, from June 4 to June 7. Held at the Ibom Golf and Country Club, the four-day event marks the second major expansion since its 2023 debut as an amateur competition. Organizers initially targeted 300 participants but exceeded expectations, with 350 registrations confirmed within weeks. Usenobong Akpabio, chair of the organizing committee, highlighted the tournament’s growing reputation on the international amateur circuit, attributing its success to better event management, sponsorship, and improved facilities. A key highlight of this year’s championship is the enhanced prize package, including a business-class return ticket on Uganda Airlines for winners, valid for any destination in the airline’s network. Akpabio emphasized that the prize structure aims to elevate competition and further establish the event’s prestige. Isua Archibong, captain of the Ibom Golf and Country Club, noted the tournament’s role in advancing Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda by boosting tourism, hospitality, and economic diversification. The championship has positioned Akwa Ibom as a premier golf destination in West Africa, drawing visitors, investors, and sports enthusiasts to the state. Analysts attribute the tournament’s growth to stronger organization, sponsorship support, and Akwa Ibom’s rising profile in sports tourism. Participation has steadily increased since the event’s launch, with this year’s confirmed 350 players representing a 40% rise over earlier editions. Stakeholders anticipate the championship will deliver significant economic benefits to Akwa Ibom, reinforcing its status as a hub for golf and tourism in the region.
