5 Nigerian startups closest to unicorn status in 2026

Nigeria’s startup ecosystem remains Africa’s largest by funding volume and digital adoption, despite a challenging global venture capital environment. Five Nigerian startups are poised to reach unicorn status by 2026, driven by strong transaction volumes, market expansion, and investor confidence. LemFi, a cross-border payments startup, specializes in remittances for Africans in the diaspora. The company has raised $85 million in venture funding, including a $53 million Series B round, and is targeting an additional €30 million. LemFi recently surpassed $1 billion in monthly transactions, expanding operations across Europe, North America, and Asia. Paystack, acquired by Stripe in 2020 for over $200 million, continues to grow as a payments infrastructure provider. Now valued at around $500 million, Paystack supports African businesses with payment tools and online commerce solutions. Kuda, a digital banking startup, has built a strong user base with mobile-first banking services. After a $500 million valuation in 2021, Kuda is focusing on monetization and credit products to sustain growth. Other startups in the unicorn pipeline include firms leveraging fintech infrastructure and scalable business models. Rising investor confidence in African tech is fueling their rapid expansion, positioning Nigeria as a leader in the continent’s digital economy.
