91 high school seniors honored on South Carolina STEM Signing Day

South Carolina marked its 10th annual STEM Signing Day on April 29 at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center, celebrating 91 high school seniors pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Modeled after collegiate sports signing events, the ceremony featured recognition from Governor Henry McMaster, members of the South Carolina Senate and House of Representatives, and a visit to the Statehouse. The event, created in 2017, has since expanded to 14 states and honored over 2,000 students nationwide, including 800 in South Carolina. STEM Signing Day was presented by Boeing Company and supported by BMW Manufacturing Co., Michelin North America, Nucor, SC Future Makers, and the South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce. Jessica Williford, Senior Director of State Advocacy and Global Engagement for Boeing South Carolina, highlighted the significance of investing in STEM education to sustain the state’s manufacturing workforce. Five students received scholarships from SC Future Makers, including Kimberly Rivera Aguirra from Calhoun County ($5,000), Aeryn Smith from Georgetown County ($2,500), Hannah English from Marlboro County ($2,500), Trevon Robinson from Williamsburg County ($1,000), and Alejandro Holloway from Kershaw County ($1,000). Elisabeth Kovacs, Executive Director of SC Future Makers, noted that the scholarships support students committed to high-demand STEM careers in South Carolina. The event underscores the state’s focus on fostering innovation and academic excellence to prepare students for future leadership roles in critical industries. Since its inception, STEM Signing Day has grown into a national movement, reinforcing the value of STEM education across the country.
