A Meaningful Vesak

Vesak, a significant day for Buddhists, is often celebrated with festivities and decorations. However, the true meaning of Vesak, as taught by the Buddha, is the pursuit of happiness through the end of suffering. The Buddhist path to happiness involves three components: mindful contemplation, wholesome conduct, and generosity. Many modern Vesak activities, such as illuminations, do not align with these principles and are driven by commercialization. Traditional Vesak lanterns, once made from biodegradable materials, now often utilize non-degradable plastics. The article suggests that Vesak celebrations should focus on purification of mind, perpetuation of Buddhist teachings, and preservation of cultural heritage.
