A new brand of politics in Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, has reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political landscape after the 2026 Assembly elections. Vijay’s rise marks a historic shift: he is the first Christian to head a coalition government in the state, breaking the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which have alternated power for over half a century. His government, composed mostly of young ministers with limited political experience, reflects a departure from traditional norms, including attire and representation. The TVK Cabinet includes eight Scheduled Caste ministers, such as Vanni Arasu from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and P. Viswanathan from Congress, alongside four women handling major portfolios like Industries and Animal Husbandry. This signals a deliberate effort to redefine political inclusion in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s coalition strategy secured Congress support and won over Communist parties and dissident AIADMK legislators, ensuring his government’s survival despite holding just 108 seats. TVK’s leadership is consolidating power by attracting AIADMK defectors, with four MLAs already resigning to join the party. Vijay’s approach prioritizes political expediency over ideology, leveraging internal dissent within AIADMK to strengthen his position. The party’s ‘whistle’ symbol and Vijay’s cinematic charisma played pivotal roles in the election, overshadowing lesser-known local candidates. Observers note Vijay’s government is young, unconventional, and focused on breaking traditional political molds. While challenges remain, including potential disqualifications of defecting AIADMK MLAs, TVK’s ability to navigate alliances and dissent positions it as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political terrain.
