Researchers compared game-day temperatures using the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, which measures heat stress on players, and found that the likelihood of unsafe conditions (28°C WBGT or higher) has doubled due to climate change. The study, led by Imperial College London, noted that while Vancouver’s conditions remain relatively safer than cities like Miami or Kansas City, the city’s climate is now 0.7°C warmer than in 1994. Vancouver and Seattle have seen the largest increase in heat intensity ranges among all World Cup host cities. Researchers emphasize that climate change is making extreme heat more probable, with summers becoming progressively hotter than those experienced by previous generations. The report warns that burning fossil fuels releases heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide and methane, trapping heat in Earth’s atmosphere like a blanket. This process is driving up temperatures, increasing the risk of dangerous heat during major events like the World Cup. Experts suggest that while some summers may still be cooler, the overall trend is toward warmer conditions, making heat-related risks a growing concern for athletes and organizers.
