Amazon launches next-generation Proteus robot as part of €10 billion Europe investment

Amazon introduced its next-generation Proteus robot at its Dartford fulfilment centre near London on June 5, 2026, as part of a €10 billion investment in Europe. The upgraded AI-powered robot can operate across warehouse floors, interpret conversational prompts, and autonomously determine task priorities, routes, and timing. This marks a shift from the current Proteus model, which is limited to dock areas in 25 U.S. sites and handles carts weighing up to 400 kg. The new Proteus is expected to deploy in Europe by the first half of 2027. Amazon also showcased STARK, a robotic tote-handling system tested in Barcelona and set for expansion to 15 European sites by 2027, and Vulcan, its first robot with tactile sensing capabilities. These advancements aim to enhance efficiency in warehouse operations. Amazon announced plans to launch over 25 sub-same-day delivery sites across Europe this year, including in Britain and Germany. Its ultra-fast essentials delivery service, Amazon Now, will expand to Manchester and Birmingham. Additionally, same-day grocery delivery is now available in over 2,300 U.S. cities and parts of Tokyo, with further expansion planned in Japan, Britain, and other regions. The company also revealed Alexa+, its next-gen AI assistant, will launch in 10 new countries in 2027. In February, Amazon forecast a 50% increase in capital expenditure to $200 billion, aligning with broader industry investments in AI infrastructure.
