Anthropic overtakes OpenAI as the world's most valuable startup after latest funding round

Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI as the world's most valuable startup following a $65 billion funding round, with a post-money valuation of $965 billion. The Series H round included investments from Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital Partners, GIC, ICONIQ, XN, and $15 billion in previously committed investments from hyperscalers like Amazon. The company also announced its annual revenue run rate has surged to $47 billion from $10 billion last year, fueled by adoption of its AI model, Claude. Claude, Anthropic’s AI chatbot and platform, is driving growth across industries, with products like Claude Code and Cowork seeing increased demand. Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao highlighted Claude’s growing indispensability for businesses and developers globally. The funding will support infrastructure expansion, AI research, and broader global deployment of Claude. Anthropic has secured additional computing capacity agreements with Amazon (up to five gigawatts), Google and Broadcom (five gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity), and SpaceX for GPU resources via its Colossus infrastructure. Claude is now accessible through Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, with AWS remaining its primary partner. Unlike OpenAI’s consumer-focused ChatGPT, Anthropic has positioned Claude as an enterprise tool for businesses and developers. Claude Code, in particular, is a key revenue driver, contributing significantly to the company’s rapid growth. The latest funding underscores Anthropic’s shift in the AI landscape, emphasizing scalability and strategic partnerships.
