Are strategies on AI merely dressed up in digital hype?

The African Union Executive Council endorsed the Continental AI Strategy during its 45th Ordinary Session in Accra, Ghana, from July 18 to 19, 2024. The strategy promotes unified national approaches among AU Member States to navigate AI-driven change. Uganda first committed to upholding ethical AI in Accra and reaffirmed this commitment at the Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 24 to 27, 2025. Uganda has taken steps to ensure ethical and inclusive AI governance, including readiness assessments and building institutional capacity. AI is driving significant advancements in technology and business, but also raises critical questions about the future of art and human artists. The use of AI-generated art and aesthetics is blurring the lines between human and machine, and presenting new opportunities for creativity, but also embedding biases and jeopardising human rights.
