Barts Health consultant recognised in King's Birthday Honours

Professor Dame Parveen Kumar, an emerita professor of medicine and education at Queen Mary University of London, has been honored with a Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours. She graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and spent 40 years in the NHS, including as a consultant gastroenterologist at Barts Health NHS Trust. Her work focused on medical education and research into small bowel disorders such as coeliac disease, with a strong emphasis on improving global health outcomes. The recognition highlights her dedication to evolving medical education for future doctors. Professor Dame Kumar expressed gratitude for the honor, acknowledging the collective efforts of her colleagues and the medical school that supported her over the years. Also recognized in the honours list is Paul Rawlinson, former chair of Barts Charity, who received an MBE for his contributions to health sector charities. He served as chair for five years, working closely with Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. His efforts aimed to enhance health outcomes in East London through charitable initiatives. Rawlinson described his time with Barts Charity as a privilege, emphasizing the rewarding nature of supporting healthcare improvements in the region. Both honorees were celebrated for their lasting impact on healthcare in East London and beyond.
