Beijing says it's 'strongly dissatisfied' with Pentagon move against top Chinese tech firms

China’s commerce ministry expressed 'strong dissatisfaction' with the Pentagon’s updated list of firms it claims are supporting Beijing’s military, released on Monday. The list includes major Chinese tech companies such as Alibaba, Baidu, and automakers BYD and NIO, along with solar panel manufacturers Trina Solar and JA Solar Technology. The move comes amid heightened U.S.-China geopolitical tensions and follows a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing last month, where both sides agreed to maintain a trade-war truce. The ministry accused the U.S. of ignoring this agreement, stating that the Pentagon’s actions are 'erroneous' and 'ignored the consensus' reached between the leaders. Under U.S. law, the Defense Department will be prohibited from contracting directly with the listed companies and restricted from purchasing their products or services through third parties starting in 2027. The ministry warned that if Chinese firms are not treated fairly, Beijing will 'inevitably retaliate resolutely and forcefully.' The updated Pentagon list supersedes a previous version from early 2025 and reflects Washington’s growing security concerns over China’s technological advancements. The ministry’s statement emphasized the need for the U.S. to 'immediately stop its erroneous practices' and return to a 'constructive strategic and stable China-U.S. relationship.'
