Can CM Vijay's Rajmohan fix a 'bleeding' Kollywood? Tamil industry stands divided

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s cabinet reshuffle, assigning the Film Technology portfolio to newly elected Egmore MLA Rajmohan Arumugam, has ignited debate within Kollywood. Actor Vishal, a Nadigar Sangam office bearer, condemned the decision, arguing the industry is in dire financial straits and requires urgent reforms. He emphasized Vijay’s deep understanding of Kollywood’s challenges, suggesting the CM’s hands-off approach risks worsening the crisis. Vishal highlighted systemic issues plaguing Tamil cinema, including inflated star salaries, prolonged film postponements, and dwindling box office returns, with theaters struggling since October 2025. The industry’s financial strain has led to production house troubles and compressed theatrical windows, raising concerns about its long-term viability. In contrast, actor-director Raghava Lawrence, a close friend of Vijay, defended the appointment, urging the industry to avoid impulsive reactions. He argued that Vijay’s decision was deliberate and that Rajmohan deserves a fair chance to demonstrate his capabilities. Lawrence acknowledged the industry’s anxiety but called for patience and support. Rajmohan, known as ‘Put Chutney Rajmohan,’ rose to prominence as a YouTuber, motivational speaker, and reality show winner before entering politics. Though not a mainstream film figure, he has acted in supporting roles in films like *Velaiilla Pattadhari 2* and *Natpe Thunai*, and made his directorial debut with a short film. The division reflects broader tensions in Kollywood, where financial instability and political interference have become recurring concerns. While some trust Vijay’s judgment, others fear the appointment lacks the necessary authority to address the industry’s pressing issues.
