China Has Sold Way More Cars In The USA Than You Might Think

Chinese automakers have indirectly entered the US market through established brands like Buick, Lincoln, Volvo, and Polestar, selling over 178,000 vehicles between 2024 and 2025 despite tariffs blocking direct sales. Models such as the Buick Envision, Lincoln Nautilus, Polestar 2, and Volvo EX30 are built in China or through Chinese joint ventures but marketed under Western badges, obscuring their origins. The Buick Envision and Lincoln Nautilus lead sales, with 21,860 and 17,504 units sold in the first half of 2024, respectively. Polestar sold 3,301 Polestar 2 units in early 2024 before tariffs reduced availability, while Volvo shifted EX30 production from China to Belgium, boosting 2025 sales to 5,409 units. Buick’s Envision, a compact premium crossover, became a key seller in the US despite being produced at a GM-Chinese joint venture plant in China. The vehicle had already succeeded domestically in China since 2014, but American buyers purchased it without realizing its Chinese production roots. Lincoln and Polestar vehicles, including the Nautilus and Polestar 2, are marketed under their established brand identities rather than highlighting Chinese manufacturing. Volvo’s EX30 transitioned to Belgian production to avoid tariffs, further masking its Chinese origins. Most consumers focus on price, brand reputation, and design rather than manufacturing location, allowing Chinese-built vehicles to enter the US market indirectly. The success of these models suggests strong demand for affordable, well-designed vehicles regardless of production origin.
