China’s Top 10 Best-Selling Car Models in May Are All Electric

China’s auto market saw a historic shift in May, with all top 10 best-selling models being electric vehicles (EVs). Geely Automobile’s Xingyuan led sales with 38,751 units, followed by Tesla’s Model Y (28,911 units), Xiaomi’s SU7, Leapmotor’s A10, and Li Auto’s i6. Only four fuel-powered vehicles appeared in the top 20, with Geely’s Boyue (13,395 units) ranking 17th, while Volkswagen’s Lavida and Nissan’s Sylphy also exceeded 10,000 units each. The surge in EV adoption pushed China’s domestic NEV penetration rate to a record 62.9 percent in May, accelerating faster than expected. Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), noted that this shift reflects a rapid replacement of fossil fuel vehicles in the consumer market. However, overall passenger vehicle sales dropped 22 percent year-over-year to 1.51 million units in May, with first-half sales declining 20 percent to 7.1 million units. The decline was primarily driven by a 39 percent drop in fossil fuel vehicle sales, attributed to high oil prices and geopolitical instability. Cui explained that rising fuel costs suppressed consumer demand for traditional cars and increased household spending pressure, further weakening purchasing power. This trend has become a key constraint on the automotive market’s growth, according to CPCA data. In April, only one fossil fuel model appeared in the top 10, compared to five in March and seven in January, signaling a clear acceleration in EV market dominance. The shift underscores China’s aggressive push toward electrification amid global energy challenges.
