Downtown Merced gets five new murals. Artists say they bring city pride, more ‘life’

Five large-scale murals by local San Joaquin Valley artists were recently installed in downtown Merced, California, as part of the Merced Arts Festival. The murals, completed in alleyways and on business walls, include works by Joel Aguilar and Aaron Vickery, known as Gamut and Fasm, featuring themes like bees, butterflies, and local history. Aguilar’s mural, titled *Sound of a Memory*, depicts birds, butterflies, and a blooming cactus, evoking personal nostalgia tied to the city. The festival, held earlier this month, included live painting sessions, live music, poetry slams, and art workshops, drawing dozens of participants. Organizers like muralist Patricia Pratt emphasized the role of art in fostering community interaction and economic development. Downtown Merced was recently named a California cultural district, one of only two in the region, signaling a new era of artistic and cultural growth. Reggie Gamboa, from Visalia, led a mural project referencing local history, including submerged train cars, symbolizing the Valley’s transportation past. Joel Martin, part of the Urbanist Collective, noted how vibrant colors alone attract curiosity and engagement from residents. The murals aim to transform public spaces into conversation starters and cultural landmarks. The project builds on Merced’s creative momentum, blending art with urban revitalization. The festival’s success highlights the district’s potential to become a hub for artistic expression and community pride.
