Exchanges among young people exceed expectations

China’s Ministry of Education announced that more than 48,500 young people from the United States have participated in exchange and study programs under the '50,000 in Five Years' initiative since its launch over two years ago. The initiative, announced by President Xi Jinping in San Francisco in November 2023, aims to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries. Yang Dan, head of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, stated the program exceeded expectations in speed and impact, with participants from all 50 US states visiting 31 Chinese regions, including Hong Kong and Macao. Participants, ranging from primary school to university students, engaged in activities like cultural immersion, language learning, and academic programs, gaining firsthand exposure to China. Many experienced topics such as global governance and environmental protection through direct interactions with Chinese peers. Yang emphasized that these exchanges fostered rational, objective perspectives on China-US relations among returning participants. The program includes diverse activities, from summer camps and sports competitions to degree courses and technology exchanges. For example, Missouri State University students visited Jiaxing University in Zhejiang last May, where they studied cross-border e-commerce and AI-driven business models at companies like Alibaba and Hormel Foods. Cultural experiences included traditional food-making workshops and visits to landmarks like Nanhu Lake and West Lake. Yang highlighted the initiative’s role in building trust and communication channels, describing each participant as a potential envoy of friendship. Moving forward, China plans to expand exchange platforms and institutionalize mutual visits to sustain long-term engagement. The goal is to deepen bilateral relations through continued youth interaction, ensuring a stable and positive future for China-US ties.
