French Artist Begins Giant ‘Cave’ Art Inflation Over Paris’ Oldest Bridge

Artist JR, dubbed the 'French Banksy,' has launched a monumental public art project over Paris’ Pont Neuf, inflating a 120-meter-long, 18-meter-tall 'cave' made of 80 fabric arches filled with 20,000 cubic meters of air. The structure, titled *La Caverne du Pont Neuf*, weighs only five tons and was hand-stitched by 25 artisans in Brittany. It will be open to the public from June 6 to June 28, closing the bridge to traffic and visible from the Seine, boats, and even the Eiffel Tower. JR’s installation is inspired by Plato’s allegory of the cave, critiquing modern reliance on digital reality, though visitors will use phones to access augmented-reality features. The project is funded by JR’s artwork sales and corporate partners, following a year of planning. Engineers tested controlled deflation at Orly Airport to ensure a safe collapse if power fails. The artwork pays homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1985 fabric-wrapped Pont Neuf, which drew three million visitors. JR’s design strips the bridge back to its limestone origins, creating a dark, immersive tunnel where visitors ‘lose track of time.’ The cave coincides with Paris Fashion Week, World Music Day, and the Nuit Blanche festival. Fabric will be reused or recycled after the installation, leaving no permanent mark. The project aims to merge nature and urban life, offering Parisians a rare pause on the bustling bridge.
