Govt to Generate Electricity from Solid Waste

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting in Islamabad to launch a national strategy for converting solid waste into electricity, addressing both energy shortages and pollution. The initiative directs federal and provincial governments to adopt modern waste management systems, with a focus on harnessing waste as a renewable energy source. The plan aligns with broader goals to cut foreign fuel imports and reduce carbon emissions, while also saving foreign exchange. A dedicated task force, comprising experts from the private sector and international waste-to-energy specialists, will design a detailed implementation roadmap. The group will assess global technologies and recommend scalable solutions for Pakistan’s waste infrastructure. The project aims to process solid waste in an environmentally sustainable way, reducing landfill pollution and generating clean energy. PM Sharif emphasized the dual benefits of economic savings and ecological protection, framing the effort as a key step toward long-term sustainability. The government will prioritize pilot projects to test feasibility before nationwide rollout, ensuring alignment with global standards.
