Habitat for Humanity marks 50 years with massive Atlanta home build

Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 50th anniversary by building 24 affordable homes in just five days in a Southwest Atlanta neighborhood, part of its largest construction effort to date. The project, supported by thousands of volunteers from around the world, aims to combat rising housing costs in Atlanta, where prices have nearly doubled in the last six years. Habitat for Humanity CEO Jonathan Reckford highlighted the crisis, noting that one in six families spends over half their income on housing, leaving little for savings, education, or other essentials. The initiative honors the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter, longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteers whose Carter Work Project has constructed over 5,000 homes in 14 countries since 1984. This is the first time the project has returned to Atlanta since 1988, when the Carters helped build 21 homes in another neighborhood. Volunteers arrive before sunrise daily to assemble homes for future homeowners, continuing the Carters’ mission of rapid, community-driven housing solutions. Among the future residents is Taka Rembert, who applied six times before being selected for a home. She expressed pride and emotional relief at finally securing housing, calling it a fulfillment of perseverance. The completed neighborhood will include 64 homes, with the 24 expected to be finished by the end of the week. The project underscores a broader housing affordability crisis affecting communities nationwide, where demand for affordable homeownership continues to surge. Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in Atlanta reflect a urgent need to address systemic challenges in housing accessibility, particularly in rapidly growing cities.
