Iranian drone attack kills one in Kuwait after US strikes Qeshm Island

Kuwait’s international airport suffered severe damage after Iranian drones and missiles struck the facility on June 3, killing one person and wounding others, according to Kuwait’s state news agency KUNA. The Kuwaiti foreign ministry condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, including diplomatic missions, and forcing the airport to close. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) stated it successfully intercepted multiple Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting regional neighbors, including Kuwait and Bahrain, on June 2. All Iranian projectiles reportedly failed to hit their intended targets, though CENTCOM later confirmed US strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island in response. No US personnel were injured in the operation. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed retaliation against the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a regional airbase following the Qeshm Island strike, a claim denied by CENTCOM. The IRGC’s statement was carried by the official IRNA news agency. Qeshm Island, located in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, has been a focal point since Iran effectively closed the key shipping channel for Gulf oil and gas exports in late February amid escalating tensions. The US maintains that ceasefire talks with Iran remain ongoing, despite earlier reports suggesting negotiations had stalled. Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran show little progress as clashes continue, with Bahrain and Kuwait reporting separate Iranian attacks in recent days. The US has repeatedly defended its strikes as self-defense measures against Iranian aggression in the Gulf region.
