J Batt, Michigan State’s athletic director, has accepted the role of Kentucky’s athletic director and CEO of Champions Blue, the university’s for-profit athletics arm. The SEC school announced the hire on Monday, just a year after Michigan State poached Batt from Georgia Tech with a six-year, $12.6 million contract. His departure follows President Kevin Guskiewicz’s move to Clemson in May, which activated a contract clause reducing Batt’s buyout to $2.5 million from $5 million. Kentucky’s hiring process took two days to finalize after Batt emerged as a frontrunner for the position left vacant by Mitch Barnhart’s retirement. Sources revealed Batt also applied for openings at Virginia Tech, Purdue, and Wisconsin.
