Kodiak AI Launches International Autonomous Trucking Operations and Enters Logging Industry

Kodiak AI, a Vancouver-based developer of Physical AI-powered autonomous vehicle technology, will pilot its Kodiak Driver system at West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd.’s log-hauling operations in Alberta, Canada, later this year. The partnership marks Kodiak’s first international deployment and expansion into the timber industry, leveraging its AI-driven autonomous trucking to transport timber from forest sites to processing facilities. West Fraser, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood building materials, seeks to improve safety and efficiency in its logging operations, which often involve remote, uneven terrain. The pilot will assess how autonomous trucks can mitigate driver shortages—a persistent issue in the sector—and reduce human exposure to hazardous conditions. The Kodiak Driver, previously deployed commercially in West Texas’s Permian Basin, is designed to handle extreme industrial environments, including dust, vibration, and harsh weather. Its modular technology has already scaled to 20 driverless trucks as of late 2025, demonstrating versatility across highways and rugged terrain. Mark Cookson, West Fraser’s Woods Operations Manager, highlighted the pilot’s potential to enhance safety and sustainability, while Don Burnette, Kodiak’s CEO, emphasized the system’s adaptability to diverse operational challenges. The collaboration was facilitated by FPInnovations, a research center supporting Canada’s forest sector, which underscored the importance of autonomous solutions for industry competitiveness. Regulatory and operational collaboration among Kodiak, West Fraser, and FPInnovations will guide the pilot’s deployment, with findings informing potential long-term commercial use of autonomous trucks in logging.
