Luxury Hotels See Strong Domestic Travel Demand

Leading luxury hospitality players in India are experiencing strong domestic travel demand this summer, with affluent travelers opting for local destinations amid geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia. ITC Hotels and Radisson Hotel Group report booking trends ahead of last year, particularly in leisure markets like hill stations and spiritual destinations. ITC Hotels Managing Director Anil Chadha noted that while international travel remains a long-term aspiration, recent disruptions have encouraged travelers to explore premium domestic alternatives. Booking trends across leisure destinations are outperforming the same period last year, reflecting a shift toward experience-led tourism. Radisson Hotel Group’s South Asia Managing Director Nikhil Sharma observed a 5% increase in occupancy levels compared to last year, with leisure destinations driving growth. Hill stations saw a 69% rise in demand, while spiritual destinations grew by 41%, highlighting a preference for relaxation, culture, and wellness experiences. Destinations like Jammu & Kashmir, Manali, Udaipur, and Ayodhya are leading the trend, alongside coastal resorts in Goa and South India. The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts CEO Anuraag Bhatnagar echoed the trend, stating that geopolitical tensions and elevated travel costs have pushed affluent travelers to prioritize domestic options. The shift aligns with a broader demand for immersive experiences, including heritage stays, wellness retreats, and nature-led escapes. Both ITC Hotels and Radisson are seeing travelers prioritize meaningful, high-quality experiences over traditional sightseeing, with wellness, gastronomy, and cultural immersion emerging as key drivers. The trend underscores a deeper shift in luxury travel preferences, where convenience and local engagement take precedence over international destinations.
