Nigeria, China Deepen Cultural, Media And Technology Ties At Abuja Dialogue Of Civilisations

Nigeria and China deepened their cultural and technological partnership during an event in Abuja on Wednesday, celebrating the International Day for Dialogue of Civilisations. The occasion included the opening of *Fan, Charm and Ink Fragrance: The Cultural Resonance of Traditional Calligraphy and Tang Dynasty Virtual Reality*, an exhibition hosted by the China Cultural Centre. The display merged ancient Chinese calligraphy, painting, and seal carving with immersive virtual reality, allowing visitors to interact with Tang Dynasty poetry and literature through modern technology. Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre, emphasized the initiative’s role in preserving heritage while fostering cross-cultural understanding. The exhibition featured works by young artists from institutions like the China Academy of Art and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, aligning with the 55th anniversary of Nigeria-China diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Yang also noted China’s recent zero-tariff measures for 53 African nations, including Nigeria, as part of broader economic cooperation. Muktar Yawale Muhammad, Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, underscored the strategic value of the partnership beyond culture, citing agreements in technology, innovation, and scientific development. He urged translating symbolic observances into tangible outcomes, such as research collaborations and technological advancements, to benefit both nations’ citizens. The exhibition’s focus on traditional calligraphy was praised as a bridge for mutual appreciation between Nigeria and China. Jibrin Baba Ndace, Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, highlighted media cooperation as a key driver of bilateral relations. He revealed that Nigeria’s international broadcaster had launched Mandarin-language programming in partnership with Chinese entities, further strengthening cultural and informational exchanges. The event brought together diplomats, media executives, academics, and students to explore how heritage and technology could enhance global understanding amid rising divisions. Participants stressed that cultural engagement remains vital for peace and cooperation, particularly as both nations mark milestone anniversaries. The dialogue emphasized practical applications of existing agreements, from economic initiatives to scientific partnerships, aiming to deliver measurable benefits to citizens.
