OpenAI launches professional services business with $4B investment

OpenAI Group PBC introduced The OpenAI Deployment Company, a new business unit dedicated to assisting companies in adopting its AI models. The subsidiary secured $4 billion in funding, with TPG as the largest external investor, alongside SoftBank Group Corp., Bain Capital, and Brookfield. OpenAI retains a majority stake and guarantees external backers a minimum 17.5% return, capped at a profit threshold. The unit is valued at $14 billion and includes contributions from consulting firms like Bain & Co., Capgemini, and McKinsey & Co. The OpenAI Deployment Company will deploy forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) to client offices to guide AI integration. These engineers assess AI applications, prioritize workflows for proof-of-concept deployments, and later build production-grade AI systems. They also handle integration with existing applications, data repositories, and cybersecurity controls, even redesigning organizational infrastructure when needed. To accelerate growth, the subsidiary plans acquisitions, announcing its first deal with Tomoro AI Ltd., a London-based firm serving clients like Virgin Atlantic and Tesco. The acquisition brings 150 technical professionals to support AI integration projects, though financial terms remain undisclosed. OpenAI’s move into professional services aligns with its recent expansions, including ad and e-commerce offerings, and may influence competitors like Anthropic to follow suit. The funding round could also bolster investor confidence ahead of OpenAI’s upcoming public offering.
