Reliance, Meta Expand Partnership With AI-Focused Data Centre Project In India

Reliance Industries and Meta Platforms have announced plans to develop an AI-focused data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. The facility will be powered by nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy, including 837 MW from new solar and wind projects by CleanMax in Rajasthan and Karnataka. Meta will lease capacity at the data center, which will support its growing AI and digital operations in the country. The project aligns with Meta’s commitment to renewable energy, as the data center will also use desalinated seawater for cooling. Meta will cover the costs of energy consumption and water usage. This initiative builds on Meta’s existing renewable energy agreements with CleanMax, bringing its total commitment with the company to over 900 MW. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani called the project a milestone for India’s digital infrastructure ambitions. He emphasized that the custom-built AI data center for Meta demonstrates India’s potential to become a key global hub for artificial intelligence. Reliance aims to support advanced AI applications and innovation through next-generation infrastructure. The partnership between Reliance and Meta dates back to 2020, when Meta invested over $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms. Since then, their collaboration has expanded into areas like bringing Meta’s open-source AI models to Indian businesses. The latest agreement extends this partnership into physical infrastructure, reinforcing Meta’s presence in India’s rapidly growing digital market. The Jamnagar facility will power Meta’s future AI products and services, further solidifying the companies’ long-term commitment to India’s tech ecosystem. This project underscores the increasing importance of sustainable and scalable infrastructure in driving AI advancements globally.
