Saving water bodies

Goa faces water shortages despite being a water-rich state due to drying reservoirs, depleted groundwater, and poor water management. Village panchayats have suggested rejuvenating public wells and water bodies to address the issue. Rejuvenation increases water storage capacity, allowing rainwater to percolate into the ground and replenish the water table. The Department of Environment and Climate Change has identified 39 lakes for rejuvenation, focusing on ecological revival and community integration. The government is working with local communities, including students, to conserve water bodies and address the water crisis. The revitalisation of water bodies should be taken up on priority in consultation with the local community to ensure long-term maintenance and sustainable management.
