Shawn Joseph nominated to be Prince George’s County Public Schools superintendent

Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy has formally nominated Shawn Joseph to become the next superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). Joseph, who has served as interim superintendent since July 2025, will now lead the state’s second-largest school district, following Braveboy’s announcement during a news conference on June 1. The nomination comes after Joseph stabilized the district’s finances, addressing a $150 million structural deficit—the largest single-year adjustment in PGCPS history—without cutting teacher positions. He also delivered the district’s first State of the Schools address in over a decade, uniting families, educators, and community partners to align on future priorities. Joseph brings over 30 years of experience in public education, including roles as superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools in Tennessee and the Seaford School District in Delaware. He holds advanced degrees from George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, and Lincoln University, along with an assistant professorship at Howard University. The Board of Education will vote on Joseph’s contract later this month, followed by final confirmation from the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. Braveboy praised Joseph’s leadership, stating his partnership with the Board will drive improvements in student achievement, employee relations, and district-wide educational quality.
