Sheikh Mohammed announces new UAE authority for AI, data, digital government

The United Arab Emirates has established a new federal authority dedicated to artificial intelligence, data governance, and digital government. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the creation of the Federal Authority for Artificial Intelligence and Data on June 15, 2026. The authority will operate under the Cabinet and be chaired by Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications. The new body will serve as a unified national framework for managing data, AI, and digital government initiatives. Its primary goal is to streamline the UAE’s digital transformation efforts, ensuring alignment between federal and local priorities. The authority will develop policies, legislation, and national programs to support a cohesive digital government system powered by agentic AI technologies. Key responsibilities include driving the UAE’s AI strategy, increasing AI’s economic contribution, and overseeing integrated digital government services. The authority will also manage government data platforms, ensuring data quality, standardization, accessibility, and secure sharing through advanced governance frameworks. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the authority’s role in creating a more efficient and proactive government. He stated that the UAE aims to develop ‘the government of the future,’ leveraging data and AI to improve decision-making, accelerate services, and create opportunities for citizens and residents. The move aligns with broader efforts to position the UAE as a global leader in digital innovation and AI adoption.
