Sony Xperia 1 VIII Debuts with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Major Camera Upgrades

Sony has launched the Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship smartphone, combining Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor with enhanced camera capabilities and premium features. The device retains Sony’s classic design, including a 6.5-inch LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, slim bezels, and a physical camera shutter button, while adding a 3.5mm headphone jack and expandable microSD storage. A key upgrade in the Xperia 1 VIII is its camera system, which replaces the previous variable optical zoom with a fixed 70mm telephoto lens paired with a 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor and f/2.8 aperture. This improves low-light performance and image clarity. The rear setup also includes a 48MP primary sensor with optical stabilization and a 24mm f/1.9 lens, alongside a 48MP ultra-wide camera with a 16mm focal length. All sensors support RAW multi-frame processing for better dynamic range and color consistency. Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset delivers a 20% CPU boost and up to 23% faster GPU performance compared to the previous generation. Sony has also introduced AI Camera Assistant features, which recommend scene-based settings while preserving manual controls. Storage options range up to 16GB RAM and 1TB internal storage, with expandable microSD support. The Xperia 1 VIII retains a 5,000mAh battery with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging. Sony has enhanced audio with front-facing stereo speakers tuned for deeper bass and improved sound staging. The device will be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold, with pricing starting at €1,500 for the 12GB RAM/256GB model. A 16GB RAM/1TB Native Gold edition is priced at €2,000, and select pre-orders include WH-1000XM6 headphones.
