WhatsApp is reportedly testing customizable chat themes for its web client, enabling users to modify wallpapers, message bubble colors, and chat backgrounds directly from their browser. The feature, still under development, will be accessible through a dedicated section in the settings menu or within individual chat info pages, according to details spotted by WABetaInfo. Users will be able to apply themes globally across all chats or assign different themes to specific conversations. The themes will remain private, meaning other participants in a chat will not see the changes. The interface is expected to use a grid layout for browsing and previewing themes before application. Initially, WhatsApp was developing 49 themes but has since reduced the number to 39 to improve the user experience and avoid visual clutter. Some themes will feature more vibrant colors and brighter backgrounds compared to WhatsApp’s current minimal design, with around eight themes offering particularly colorful visual styles. The feature is currently being tested and will likely roll out first to beta users before a wider release. The update reflects WhatsApp’s growing focus on enhancing the web experience, which has historically lagged behind the mobile app in terms of customization options. Themes will not affect other users in a conversation, ensuring privacy while allowing individuals to personalize their chat experience. This move could appeal to users who rely on WhatsApp Web for extended periods, such as for work or study, by offering a more dynamic and visually engaging interface.
