South Portland names new superintendent

South Portland has selected Angela Atkinson Duina as its new superintendent, effective July 15. Duina currently serves as the assistant superintendent of elementary schools for Portland Public Schools, where she oversees 10 schools with around 3,000 students. She brings extensive experience in education leadership, including roles as an education professor at the University of Southern Maine and a research director, along with advanced degrees from Boston University, Harvard University, and Boston College. The appointment follows the resignation of the previous superintendent in June 2025 and the interim leadership of George Entwistle. Duina’s hiring comes as the district navigates significant financial strain, including an $8.4 million budget cut to limit a 6% tax increase. These cuts forced the closure of James O. Kaler Elementary School and the elimination of 50 staff positions. Residents will vote on the budget on June 9. Duina’s leadership will also address ongoing challenges, such as the recent resignation of School Board Vice Chair Adrian Dowling amid recall efforts targeting him and Chair Rosemarie De Angelis. The board delayed a planned reconfiguration of elementary schools until the 2027-28 school year to allow time for a steering committee to develop a plan. School Board Chair Rosemarie De Angelis praised Duina’s skills in community building and instructional leadership, emphasizing her ability to foster relationships while maintaining efficiency. Duina expressed enthusiasm for leading a district that prioritizes learning and equity, aiming to build on South Portland’s foundation of community pride. The search process involved collaboration with consultants Zeal Education Group and input from community members and staff to define the ideal leadership profile. Duina’s background includes experience as a dean of faculty and vice principal, positioning her to address both operational and instructional needs in the district.
