Southern Illinois IT companies share how local business is growing

Southern Illinois is tied for first in Illinois for percentage job growth in information technology, according to a new report. Mayer Networks, an IT company in the region, has expanded from one employee to over two dozen in two decades, specializing in managed services like network infrastructure maintenance. The company plans to increase its involvement in government services, ensuring secure networks for municipalities, police departments, and other critical infrastructure. NorthBridge IT Services, based in Marion, reports growing demand from churches and rural communities, particularly for Starlink connectivity and security camera installations. The company’s structured cabling division, established three years ago, now handles Cat 6 cabling and internet connectivity for manufacturing and large facilities across Southern Illinois. Local economic leaders attribute the growth to Southern Illinois’s strategic location, featuring three interstates (I-57, I-64, and I-24), five of six class-one rail lines, and direct flights to Chicago O’Hare. The region’s transportation network supports manufacturing, distribution, and tech-driven industries, making it attractive for businesses. The Illinois Economic Development Corporation’s report also highlights strong growth in manufacturing, finance, and agriculture-related sectors. Regional education programs, such as those at John A. Logan Community College, are helping companies like Mayer Networks build a local workforce. Leaders aim to retain young talent by creating high-wage, high-growth job opportunities in the area.
