Survivor rescued from flooded Laos cave but remaining group faces another night underground

A villager was rescued from a flooded cave in Laos’s Xaisomboun province after being trapped for over a week due to flash flooding. The rescue was conducted by a multinational team of specialist cave divers, who temporarily halted operations until Saturday morning to address the remaining four known survivors. The five villagers were found huddled together in a pitch-black chamber above murky water, over 800 feet from the cave entrance, which slopes downward at a 45-degree angle. The rescued man, identified as Mued, suffered hand and foot problems from prolonged immersion in water. The remaining survivors are enduring severe hunger and health issues, including skin, stomach, and intestinal problems. Two other individuals believed to have entered the cave earlier remain missing and have had no contact with the rescue team. The rescue operation, which had been ongoing for nearly ten days, is set to resume at 9 a.m. local time on Saturday. The cave’s perilous conditions, including darkness and rising water levels, have complicated efforts to reach the trapped villagers. Divers have described the environment as extremely challenging, requiring careful coordination and technical expertise to safely extract the remaining survivors. The rescue team, including members from the Metta Tham Kalasin Command and Control Center, has been working around the clock to address the crisis. The situation remains critical, with the trapped villagers facing increasing health risks due to their prolonged confinement underground.
