Texas Tech softball star Mia Williams was hit by a pitch during a Women’s College World Series (WCWS) game against Mississippi State on Thursday. Bulldogs pitcher Alyssa Faircloth delivered the 51 mph pitch, striking Williams in the back during the bottom of the first inning. Williams walked to first base after being hit, and in her next at-bat, teammate Jackie Lis drove a two-run home run, giving Texas Tech a 2-0 lead with no outs. This incident marks the sixth time Williams has been hit by a pitch in the last four games, following only four such occurrences in her first 61 games. Williams, the daughter of former NBA player Jason Williams, transferred to Texas Tech this offseason after two seasons at Florida, which Texas Tech faced in the super regional. During the series, she was hit by a pitch five times, including on the first pitch of Game 3 by Florida ace Keagan Rothrock. When not being hit by pitches, Williams went 3-for-7 with two home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored. Jason Williams previously criticized Florida coach Tim Walton’s ejection in the Texas Tech-Florida super regional, calling it premeditated to avoid shaking hands with his daughter post-game. The WCWS game saw Texas Tech take an early lead, with Mississippi State trailing 2-0 after Lis’s home run. Williams’s recent struggles with being hit by pitches have drawn attention, especially given her strong offensive production in other at-bats. The incident adds to the series’ intensity, where Williams has faced repeated misfortune at the plate.
