Trade, Defence and QUAD Talks on Agenda as Top US Diplomat Rubio Lands in Kolkata

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a four-day visit to India on May 23, landing in Kolkata to advance cooperation in trade, defence, technology, energy security, and the shared Indo-Pacific strategy. The trip precedes the QUAD foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi on May 26, where India, the United States, Australia, and Japan will review regional security challenges, including maritime issues. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will chair the meeting, with Rubio joining Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi for discussions on coordination and crisis response. Energy security is a key focus, as Rubio seeks to scale up US oil and gas exports to India amid volatile fuel prices and shipping risks. He emphasized Washington’s readiness to supply as much energy as India demands, citing record US production and potential cooperation involving Venezuelan crude. The move aims to reduce India’s exposure to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio’s itinerary includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, blending diplomatic outreach with policy discussions. Meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders will cover defence ties, advanced technologies, and economic cooperation. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed the visit’s agenda, highlighting deeper collaboration in trade, technology, and regional stability. The QUAD meeting will serve as a central pillar of Rubio’s agenda, reinforcing India’s role as a key democratic partner amid instability from West Asia to the Indo-Pacific. Senior officials expect the visit to sustain momentum in recent dialogue, balancing public diplomacy with substantive negotiations.
