UK Government Announces Plans to Grow National AI Infrastructure

The UK Government is supporting Britain's AI hardware infrastructure development and collaborating with other nations to establish AI deployment standards. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of a sovereign AI strategy for the UK's economic and national security. The government will launch an AI Hardware Plan in June, building on its £100 million investment in ARIA's scaling compute programme. The UK has already taken steps to support its AI sector, including launching a Sovereign AI Unit that has invested £500 million in British AI startups. The unit has funded two UK AI companies, including Ineffable Intelligence, which secured a $1.1 billion seed round. Kendall highlighted the potential economic benefits of securing 5% of the global AI chips market, which could bring $50 billion in revenue and create tens of thousands of high-paid jobs.
