University High School graduates first senior class

University High School (UHS) in Memphis, Tennessee, graduated its first senior class of 89 students on a campus shared with the University of Memphis. The milestone comes after more than 100 years of operation as part of the University Schools system, which began as a teacher-training program in 1912. All 89 graduates will receive diplomas, with 30 staying on campus to attend the University of Memphis, including Azaria Whipe, the first in her family to pursue higher education. The school’s success extends beyond graduation rates, with University Schools ranking second statewide in TCAP scores in 2023. The achievement reflects the institution’s focus on academic excellence and student outcomes, whether through college enrollment, trade school, or career readiness. Dr. Sally Parish, Vice Provost and Director of Schools, emphasized the emotional significance of the first graduating class, noting that some students had been part of the program since early childhood. The path to this milestone required legislative action: the 2024 Innovative School District Act removed enrollment caps, allowing University Schools to operate independently as its own district. Rep. Mark White (R-TN83) supported the bill, which enabled the school to expand without restrictions. University Schools now serves over 1,200 students across Shelby County, with a waitlist exceeding 1,000 applicants. Founded in 1912, University Schools initially operated as an elementary training school before expanding to include middle school in 2019 and high school in 2022. The first middle school class graduated in 2023, setting the stage for this year’s historic high school commencement. Students like Brayden Spann and Brandon Dill described their experience as trailblazing, noting the unique challenges and opportunities of being part of the inaugural class. The school’s growth reflects a broader demand for high-quality public education in Memphis, with students coming from every zip code in Shelby County.
