USA TODAY Sports is recognizing the 250 greatest American sports figures as the US approaches its 250th anniversary. As part of this, the USA TODAY Network is highlighting the best football players from Iowa. Ten players are listed, all of whom excelled at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. The players include Trev Alberts, Jay Berwanger, Dallas Clark, and Roger Craig. Alberts played for Northern University High School and Nebraska, winning the Dick Butkus award in 1993. Berwanger, from Dubuque Senior, won the first Downtown Athletic Club Trophy, later renamed the Heisman Trophy, while at the University of Chicago. Clark, from Twin River Valley, won the John Mackey Award and was a Super Bowl winner with the Indianapolis Colts. Craig, from Davenport Central, is a three-time Super Bowl Champion and was the first player to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
