Twenty-two passengers from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship MV Hondius, including 20 British nationals, a German, and a Japanese citizen, have arrived at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral, Merseyside, for mandatory quarantine. None showed symptoms upon arrival, but they will be monitored for 72 hours in a dedicated block, the Frontis building, which was originally constructed in 2006 to house medical students and later repurposed for COVID-19 quarantine in 2020. The site was chosen for its proximity to Liverpool’s Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, which provide specialist care for infectious diseases. NHS authorities described the effort to prepare the facility as 'genuinely herculean,' ensuring strict infection control measures, including PPE for all staff, drivers, and medical teams. Passengers will stay in flats with panoramic views, receiving food and essentials during their isolation period. After 72 hours, specialists will assess whether the passengers can safely quarantine at home or another location for up to 45 days. Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust assured that the quarantine will not disrupt regular hospital services, with patients advised to attend appointments as usual. The facility is separated from the main hospital, minimizing any risk to patients, visitors, or staff. Local residents expressed concerns during the COVID-19 quarantine, but officials reiterated that the site is secure and poses no risk to the surrounding community. The decision to use Arrowe Park was described as 'planned, controlled, and carefully managed,' involving coordination between NHS bodies, Merseyside Police, and Wirral Council. This marks the first use of the facility for hantavirus quarantine, following its previous role in isolating COVID-19 evacuees from China in 2020.
